Hailing from Northern California, Blueshift plays a unique blend of alternative rock, incorporating elements of reggae, funk, hip-hop, and grunge. Their unmistakable sound coupled with their consistently superb and innovative songwriting makes them a force to be reckoned with in the underground music scene. When asked about their wide range of musical influences, Blueshift responded, “Any kind of music we enjoy naturally becomes incorporated into our own brand of rock music.” Blueshift has performed extensively in the Bay Area, and is currently planning a West Coast tour. Some of their performance highlights include: UC Berkeley, SSU, Chico State and the Lifeschool Benefit sponsored by KRSH 95.9 FM. Blueshift played at the Last Day Saloon and the Phoenix Theater, sharing the stage with acts like Lyrics Born, Trainwreck and KRS-One. They have appeared repeatedly at the Sebastopol 3rd of July Fireworks Extravaganza, an event attended by thousands annually. Blueshift routinely makes appearances on local television and radio stations. Blueshift’s music video for “Yesmen” has received notoriety on Youtube for its originality and humor, while their debut album, Dirty Machine, at a whopping 15 tracks, has been well received by fans. Their second album is expected to be released in Fall of 2011.Blueshift was formed in the summer of 2004 by childhood friends Jared O’Connell and Waylon Nicholson, who grew up together on the Russian River. Waylon’s remarkable guitar style is original and intricate, and his songwriting is sincere. O’Connell’s pleasing, edgy vocals, melodic guitar work, and insightful lyrics are easy to listen to. They were joined by Tim Qualls, a strong vocalist with catchy melodies, who lays down drum beats while singing harmonies and sometimes lead. Local bass virtuoso Alex Izzarelli was brought into the band. Izzarelli writes funky, often complex bass lines played on his homemade bass, and occasionally performed by his rowdy, charismatic, on-stage alter ego, Terrance Tate. A year later, Nick Tudor, who attended the same high school as O’Connell and Nicholson, joined up with Blueshift. Switching between sax, keyboards, percussion, guitars, and vocals, Tudor rounds out the band’s sound with his versatile musicianship. Blueshift took a one year hiatus in 2007, but returned stronger than ever with a renewed fury and passion, dedicated to the knowledge that they were born to rock together. All five members are practiced musicians who, after playing together for more than 6 years, perform comfortably on stage, easily engaging the audience, improvising and putting on a great show.
